O’Shaughnessy’s Chameleon, is an active midsized chameleon from a narrow strip from central to Southern Madagascar at elevations around 1200 to 1300m by the IUCN Redlist. We adopted the common name Shamrock Chameleon due to the many people avoiding saying the entire four syllable name and reducing the name to “Os” which is an injustice to a chameleon of this beauty. This chameleon was named after poet and herpetologist Arthur O’Shaughnessy. The name “Shamrock Chameleon” beautifully represents his Irish roots and the rich greens found in this chameleon. Common names are not official and can be assigned to serve the community. Thus the Shamrock Chameleon name has been adopted by this project.
The O’Shaughnessy’s Chameleon lives among tall trees in dense forest. The area is humid all year. It has regular rain during the wet season, but rain will still fall during the dry season. So hydration will be a major topic with this species.
Although O’Shaughnessy’s Chameleon has a regular quote for export, the numbers are 300 worldwide and this species has not had a focused effort. Therefore captive hatched are extremely difficult to find.
