Marginated Tortoise

The Marginated Tortoise (Testudo marginata) is the largest of the Mediterranean tortoises in the genus Testudo. It is recognized for its elongated shell and distinctive flared rear marginal scutes, which create the characteristic skirt-like appearance.

Appearance

Adult Marginated Tortoises typically have a dark to black carapace with contrasting cream or yellow markings on the scutes. Their plastron features distinctive dark chevron-shaped markings.

Young tortoises have a lighter shell with cream or pale coloration and darker borders. As they mature, their coloration generally becomes darker and more pronounced.

Males are typically larger than females and develop a more pronounced rear flare. They also tend to have a concave plastron, larger head, and longer tail. Females generally have a flatter plastron and shorter tail.
